Tucked away in the Mweelrea Mountains and Sheeffry Hills of County Mayo, the Scottish Blackface Mountain sheep grace the terrain throughout Glen Keen Farm. These horned, blackface beauties have become a part of the farm’s culture, history, and landscape for over hundreds of years.
With Glen Keen’s Adopt-a-Sheep programme, your sponsorship will contribute to the support, maintenance, and preservation for over 500 of the ultimate mountain sheep that reside at our working family farm and homestead.
Arriving in the 1800s, British landlords made way for the intensive farming of the Scottish Blackface Mountain sheep. Throughout the years, the sheep evolved and adapted to the local mountain range; the extreme and rugged environment shaped them into what they are today.
Today, Glen Keen Farm is situated within an EU-designated Special Area of Conservation, and our sheep are vital in maintaining habitat control and the healthy biodiversity in the area.
The sheep are etched in our Irish history through all of the trials and tribulations – especially at Glen Keen Farm. We are continuously exploring ways to preserve and continue the breed, and could use your help. Join the flock, and Adopt-a-Sheep today!
For only €60, your adoption fee will support and maintain our efforts for the Scottish Blackface Mountain sheep for one year and includes:
Personalised certificate of adoption suitable for framing. Handmade sheep brooch made with our own homespun wool. A free-of-charge visit to Glen Keen Farm or to one of our scheduled sheep herding demonstrations.
Glen Keen will communicate photos and updates with you through social media, email, and your Adopt-a-Sheep items, which will be sent directly to you, as appreciation and acknowledgement for your support of our work here on the farm.
ADOPT A SHEEP
With Glen Keen’s Adopt-a-Sheep programme, your sponsorship will contribute to the support, maintenance, and preservation for over 500 of the ultimate mountain sheep that reside at our working family farm and homestead.
The Sheep Adoption packages include one complimentary sheep herding experience for two Guests during the term of adoption. The sheep herding experience must be booked in advance and is subject to availability. Experience duration is approximately 45 minutes. Please note Glen Keen is a large mountain sheep farm and unfortunately, it is not possible to provide individual introductions to the adoptee ewes due to the nature of the terrain and logistics in gathering the sheep off the mountain scape.
